HGV Drivers: 6 Common Misconceptions

Highlighted is a list of the top six most popular misunderstandings HGV drivers face daily.

Being an HGV driver is not an easy job, contrary to popular belief. It is not a career path that just anyone can do. The drivers themselves perpetrate some of the rumours and misconceptions regarding HGV careers and make matters worse.

HGV drivers play a critical part in the economy and the proper operation of our society as a whole. Sadly, they are largely unappreciated.

As a result, we’ve decided to shed some light on some of the most widespread misunderstandings concerning HGV drivers in the hope we can help dispel the myths and encourage new drivers to take on the role.

1 – All HGV Drivers are Men

Even though trucking, like construction and IT, is generally a male-dominated sector, female truck driver numbers are rising in the UK and worldwide. Female drivers are just as capable as men in this field. Several women we’ve met have performed better than their male counterparts!

2 – Anyone Can Drive a Truck

Yes, with the proper HGV driver training, anyone can become a driver. It is, however, not a career for everyone. Some people are better suited than others to it.

3 – HGV Drivers Are Not Valued

Not valid at all when it comes to truckers. HGV drivers are literally the driving force behind a company. Businesses would collapse if HGV drivers were not available. There would be nothing to buy in the shops. All of the critical and necessary items you purchased would never see the light of day.

4 – Truckers are Reckless Drivers

HGV drivers receive effective and ongoing training. Because of their ongoing training requirements, they are among the safest and most advanced drivers on the road.

Professional HGV drivers are the safest, most modern, most closely supervised drivers in the UK outside of the emergency services.

5 – HGV drivers are unconcerned about the safety of other road users.

HGV drivers have a reputation for being “Good Samaritans” who are the first to stop if they spot a motorist in need. Not only that, HGV drivers are more cautious, safety-conscious, and well-trained than the majority of motorists.

The majority of lorry accidents occur as a result of drivers driving in their blind zones. Do keep in mind that a trucker can easily cover ten times the distance travelled by the average motorist merely while on the job!

6 – The Pay is Bad

While some firms do not pay adequately, this is not a problem exclusive to the HGV driving industry. In reality, an HGV driver’s starting income ranges from £17 to £21,000

You can earn a lot more money if you have experience. Drivers with the most experienced can make more than £40,000 per year with us.
There has never been a more beneficial time to start a career as a heavy-duty vehicle driver in Birmingham, Manchester and the West Midlands. The pay and benefits provided have never been better.
